Keg Sizes and Dimensions, Spelled Out
Homebrew Keg: Cornelius (Corny) Keg
The Cornelius keg is the preferred keg among home brewers because of the large lid on top, which allows for easy access. Home brewers can clean out and transfer beer into the keg without any special equipment. A standard Cornelius keg holds 5 gallons, the typical size for a home-brewed batch of beer. There are two types of Corny kegs: Ball Lock (Pepsi-style) and Pin Lock (Coca-Cola-style).
- Capacity: 5 gallons (640 oz), about 53 twelve-ounce beers
- Full weight: 53.7 lbs
- Ball Lock dimensions: 23″ H x 8.5″ diameter
- Pin Lock dimensions: 23″ H x 8.9″ diameter
Commercial Keg Sizes
Commercial kegs come in various sizes and shapes. Commercial kegs use a Sanke tap, which connects to the top center of the keg. This tap has both the CO2 line (in) and beer line (out) connected to it, unlike Corny kegs, which have separate connections for each.
