Not only do we make beer at home, but we love to make soda for the kids and ourselves. This is a great alternative to store bought soda because it is a lot cheaper and because all the soda you make at home is caffeine free!
How to Make Homemade Soda:
Making soda at home is very easy, you only need 3 ingredients:
Water- Sugar
- Soda Extract
Depending on how much you will be making at one time will determine how much of these three ingredients you will be using. But since we keg our homemade soda and put it on draft, we make the full amount (which is 4 Gallons).
Step by Step:
- Add 4 Gallons of water to your stock pot.
- Add 4 lbs of Table Sugar to your water.
- Bring water to almost boiling, stirring constantly to prevent sugar from burning on bottom of pot.
- Once sugar is dissolved, turn off heat, add your soda extract and stir.
- Cover and let cool.
- Add soda to keg, refrigerate and force carbonate with CO2.
Its that easy! If you do not have a keg system and would like one, the Basic Keg Kit is great because it comes with everything that you need to carbonate and dispense from a 5 gallon keg! This basic keg kit uses a small 20oz co2 tank, which is also used for paint-balling. So you will be able to refill this CO2 tank at any local paintball store (which are easy to find!).
If you do not have the space for a 5 Gallon Keg in your refrigerator you can always use a smaller 2.5 Gallon Keg, or you can get one of our simple soda carbonating kits which allow you to carbonate any liquids in a 2 Liter soda bottle. This setup is also great because you are able to keep the carbonated 2L soda bottles in your refrigerator (without taking up much space) until you are ready to open them up and enjoy.

I was just wondering if you could maybe help me. We have been wanting to make our own homemade soda and to just start and try it out, we purchased a soda stream so we didn’t have to invest a lot of money to get started. My family does not like the soda we get off of it because it has an after taste. Do you by chance know if that is because of the carbonating or the flavoring. And if it’s from the carbonating, is it something we would be able to eliminate by using the keg carbonation?
It’s not likely that its the carbonation, so it would most likely have to be the flavoring. Maybe start by trying some different flavorings and see if you get different results that way.
